Jiaxan, regarded as a gateway to Taiwan’s Central Mountain Range, is a peaceful village of approximately 6000 residents living within. Apparently I am here more less only the one foreigner ( despite Josh, the husband of Taiwanese teacher Ma). This district serves as a market centre for local farmers and tourists. This fact is confirmed by local fields that almost every family owns. You can find here several major planted fruits such as mangos, guavas, bananas, jackfruit (with mango my number 1). Rice is a must, of course. But the most famous local crop is taro. Taro’s shops are on every corner. Popular products sold in these shops are taro – flavoured ice cream, taro cookies or savoury snacks.
This township is also known for its bamboo shoots and plums. The bamboo shoots can be prepared on so many ways and all of them are delicious. Speaking of plums. Once I ordered the ice green tea with plum. I thought they had changed a sweetener for a salt. Then I was informed the special salty and bitter taste is caused because the plum presence.
In short. Plums here are green and not eaten as a plain fruit. They are preserved and used in a syrup or as a flavoring. I usually use some pieces for making a lemonade. It is refreshing and tasty!
It has been second week I have been living here in Jiaxian with my host family. It feels like I came yesterday though. I have been able to observe a little bit more of residents polite behavior, a kind attitude and their hospitality. Also I was taken to several beautiful spots. I could mention Longfong Temple, four floor temple with breathtaking architecture.
I am not sure whether I am willing to leave this peaceful place when it comes to the end. Before It happens, I am going to move in to different family for another two weeks.
More about them and my upcoming experience with community will come with my next update!
