Siaolin village: Buried alive

After breakfast Ming Long Luo (the father of the family) took Mimmy and me for an organic brewed coffee in near neighbourhood.

We hit the road afterwards and continued driving to Siaolin village. This place is known for the Typhoon Morakot in 2009, the deadliest typhoon that hit Taiwan since the establishment of Taiwan's typhoon warning system (1992).

I wasn’t really aware of what is coming.

Village is divided for two parts, north and south. The north part is located at a lower elevation and was completely wiped out by the landslide while the south part was unaffected. Main sediment had only buried part of the village, but an artificial dam broke, burying the rest of it.

The entire village was nearly razed to the ground, leaving one building standing.

Over 400 people died because of the movement of land. 150 people were transported to safety after the disaster.

The main road that connected village with several places was devastated so we could see just remained tunnels overgrown with greenery.

We pulled over near Siaolin Memorial park that commemorate the victims.

Even though I felt like melting in that heat I couldn't ignore the atmosphere at that spot. It was indescribable.

Every lost family has got a memorial wood block.

Also the park includes an ancestral hall, bridge, memorial square, monument and viewing platform.

This whole area, just flat land after the disaster, Memorial Park full of souls, calm river flowing through, no human being around. A ghost place. Only gentle wind tried to whisper to us. And If you have listened it would made you mute.

On the contrary, the beautiful scenery misled that nothing could have happened here. A nature is really unpredictable.

For the survivors of the landslide were built permanent houses that are located upper now then previous ones.

I definitely recommend to see this place If you get a chance. It is definitely worth to feel that atmosphere on your own skin!
