There was quite a lot of interesting activities which we did in Jici village with the local people. They taught us some of the key activities they do and shared their past experiences with us. The most remembered ones were the fishing and hunting.
Fishing
The aboriginals have their own traditional techniques to catch fresh-water species for their food. They have special instruments to catch fish, crab and prawn. Most of the tools they use are made from bamboo.
As soon as we reach the Kaluluan river, they offered a few glasses of rice wine to the river God as a token of gratitude from them. It is their belief that when the river God is pleased, She would offer quite a lot of fish, crab and shrimp for them. Interesting !
Then they analyse the flow of water and divert water to one side of the river blocking the other side with sand and soil. In the blocked channel of the river, they keep the small fish net at a short distance say a 50 feet away. Now the area within the blocked boundary is the area to catch the fish.
We catch fish with empty hands by searching carefully in the mud. Most of the shrimps are under the stones. The elderly people catch a lot of prawn and they taught us some basic techniques. We caught a lot of river species. The half day is really enjoyable. Now, I can go to any place and can find my own fresh food. They also taught us how to cook food.
Hunting
They do hunt small animals at night. One fine night we went to the woods and made small traps to catch wild animals. They also have guns to shoot the animals. They are good at aiming and shooting down the prey. Vow, that was hilarious.
